Gems and minerals are bountiful in the rocks in Colorado, and you can find some great ones if you keep an eye out hiking through Summit.



Gems and minerals are bountiful in the rocks in Colorado, rivaled only by the abundance in California. A casual hunter can spot a wide variety of colors. Gold nuggets have even been found by hikers!

Taking the rocks you find on public lands is permitted, but don’t go overboard. You can also request a permit from the Dillon Ranger District for taking rocks and minerals from the National Forest.




Find polished gemstones at souvenir shops around the county.


If you don’t find any great gems, you can check out local stones or take some home from these great shops.
