Snowshoeing is a great way to tour some beautiful summit county scenery while getting some exercise outside. Rental, second-hand, or brand new gear is available at many ski shops around the county.
Tour a Winter Wonderland
Snowshoeing is great exercise and fun for the whole family.
Local adventure companies offer guides that will help you safely explore the backcountry, or make it a multi-day adventure at one of the Summit Huts.
Snowshoeing is a great way to wear out your energetic pup as well… most trails are dog friendly (just make sure you clean up your waste).
Safety first in the backcountry
Rent avalanche beacons if you plan on venturing into the backcountry.
If you plan on venturing into the backcountry consider renting or buying a beacon so that rescue personnel can locate you in the event of an accident. Epic Mountain Gear offers backcountry packages that include a beacon, shovel, and probe. Don’t venture into unfamiliar or extreme territory alone and always pay attention to the weather and avalanche warnings for the local terrain.
Nordic Centers
So where can you get started? Four local nordic centers offer full outfitting, lessons, and miles of groomed nordic trails. Many offer other activities like snowshoeing, fat biking, sleigh rides, and more. If you want a cozy lodge with hot drinks at the end of your snowy day, these spots are for you.
